FIFA 16 feels less mechanical than its predecessor

After a very brief teaser dropped last week, along with some basic information regarding the game, we were finally treated to the full FIFA 16 reveal at the E3 conference held by EA today. The focus was primarily on the gameplay and match engine itself rather than any information regarding new content or game modes.

Promising that this year you will really “feel the game” we were teased with several marketing buzzwords. For example “player memories” and “emotional intelligence”, which will be reflected in the manner to which players react emotionally depending on the context of a match. We also got the typical slew of claims regarding a more realistic than ever match engine with player “athleticism” being the most touted improvement this year.

FIFA 16 feels less mechanical than its predecessor and I wanted to steal the PS4 it was running on. Knocking the ball around is fun again and makes me excited for more. All of the other elements of a soccer match are there as well of course. Shooting gives you a real sense of how the ball came of a player’s laces. I could tell if a ball was mis-hit or if a player like Messi curled it into a corner to perfection. Crossing the ball also felt better as it balls appear more weighty than in the past which also goes for the passing game. Playing FIFA 16 shows that EA Sports has made the game more fun, fluid and dynamic. Defensively players can now do a better job of containing the attacker and even tackle the ball of a striker’s foot without poking it away but keeping it in the best Sergio Ramos manner.

The new point-of-contact system, combined with an increased focus on player agility, is also allowing for one of those FIFA additions that you don’t realise has been missing until it’s put in front of you: players that heavily favour their right or left foot. Now, the likes of Messrs Messi and Bale won’t just look different when dribbling left-footed but will also feel slightly different as the ball responds to their touch.

One new system in the game dictates that all the players on the pitch will have changing attitudes towards their team-mates, according to whether those team-mates have performed well or not. They may clap each other along to maintain team spirit, or shake their heads when someone is clearly under-performing. As for their attitudes to opponents, a scrappy foul may be overlooked, but two or three few more and you'll have a fight on your hands.
